  • GENERAL ENGLISH

    ENTRY PRE-REQUISITES

    No pre-requisites.
    In house ELICOS Placement Test.

    TEACHING METHODS
    Classes are communicative task-based learning. Students are given an in house placement test to determine which class suits them best. Each level follows a syllabus, covering the four macro skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

    ASSESSMENT
    Assessment is ongoing, based on student participation and language proficiency in all four skill areas. Continuous assessment examines achievement in a range of language tasks across the four skill, these include oral presentations, group and research projects as well as practical tasks. Specific assessments will be based on reading, writing, listening and speaking being the macro skills of language.

    ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
    Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

    PATHWAYS
    Students completing an ELICOS program will receive a certificate, which states in detail their English language proficiency.

    When students successfully complete their ELICOS study, and attain the levels required by Nova Institute RTO courses, they will be able to enroll in the following vocational tertiary training courses offered at Nova Institute.

    If you have come to Australia to study for a reason other than further or higher education you will be placed in the General English Course.

    This course is designed to develop your English communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The emphasis of the course is to learn while having fun and using English in a practical way.

    The GE course runs at four levels, and each level is 12 weeks in length.

    GE Elementary
    GE Pre-Intermediate
    GE Intermediate
    GE Upper Intermediate

    You may progress through the course as you successfully complete each level but be aware that very few students will complete all four levels within a 48 week period and it is likely that you will need to repeat one or more levels to gain a high degree of proficiency.

  • ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

    ENTRY PRE-REQUISITES

    Successfully complete a Nova Institute of Technology General English Course which articulates into the English for Academic Purposes course

    OR

    Achieve a satisfactory result in an ELICOS Placement Test

    OR

    Demonstrate your level of English by providing evidence from an international testing performance

    TEACHING METHODS
    Classes are communicative task-based learning.

    If you are in Australia to prepare for study in a Vocational Course or a University you will be placed in our English for Academic Purposes Course (EAP).

    This course is designed to help you to learn the English you need to be able to study in a mainstream course alongside Australian students whose first language is English.

    The course will help with general communication, but will also help you to learn the vocabulary required by the subjects in Vocational and University courses.

    The EAP course runs at two levels, each level is 12 weeks X 20 hours per week (240 hours long).

    EAP 1 Upper Intermediate level

    EAP 2 Pre-Advanced level

    In order to progress to the next level in these courses, you have to successfully complete the course at your current level.

  • IELTS PREPARATION

    ENTRY PRE-REQUISITES

    Successfully complete a Nova Institute of Technology General English Course which articulates into the English for Academic Purposes course

    OR

    Achieve a satisfactory result in an ELICOS Placement Test

    OR

    Demonstrate your level of English by providing evidence from an international testing performance

    If your major purpose in studying English is to achieve an acceptable score in the IELTS test you will be placed in our IELTS preparation course. This course is designed to assist you in learning the types of English that will help you to achieve the score you require. THIS IS NOT PURELY AN EXAMINATION PRACTICE COURSE.

    The IELTS Course runs at two levels, and each level is 12 weeks in length.

    IELTS 1 Upper Intermediate level

    IELTS 2 Pre-Advanced level

    The English for IELTS preparation classes emphasize the
    • development of spoken fluency
    • reading skills – understanding complex texts; what is not directly stated
    • listening for main ideas, detail, particular information, essay writing
    • understanding question types
    • active participation in the learning environment
